What is an OCR good for?

OCR stands for optical character recognition, also known as OCR extraction or text recognition: it detects the text that appears inside an image and turns it into text you can select, copy and edit. It's useful for pulling text out of a screenshot, a photographed page, a receipt, a sign or a scanned PDF without retyping it by hand.

The result depends on the source image: a sharp, straight, well-contrasted photo is recognized far better than a tilted, blurry or dark one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy text from an image?
Upload the image to OmniPixy's Text Extractor, choose the language and run the recognition. Then copy the text to your clipboard.

Does it work with Spanish text?
Yes. It recognizes English and Spanish, and you can turn both on at once for mixed documents.

Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Recognition runs in your browser with Tesseract.js. The first time it downloads the language data (1 to 4 MB), but your image never leaves your device.

How can I recognize or detect text in a picture?
Upload the picture to the OmniPixy OCR tool and it will detect and recognize the text in it, line by line. It works on screenshots, photos of documents, receipts and signs, as long as the text is readable.

How do I get a better result?
Use a straight, well-lit image with the text as large as possible. If the photo is small or blurry, retake it or enlarge it before running the OCR.
